What is a CNAME record?

A CNAME (Canonical Name) record makes one hostname an alias of another. When a client looks up the alias, DNS follows the CNAME to the real (canonical) name and resolves that instead. CNAMEs are common for www, CDNs, and SaaS verification.

Why chains matter

A CNAME can point to another CNAME, forming a chain. Each hop is an extra DNS lookup that adds latency, and a single broken link breaks the whole name. This tool walks the entire chain so you can see every hop and the final address.

Frequently asked questions

Can the root domain (apex) use a CNAME?

Not in standard DNS — the apex needs A/AAAA. Some providers offer CNAME-flattening or ALIAS/ANAME records to work around this.

How many CNAME hops are too many?

There's no hard limit, but every hop adds latency and fragility. Keep chains as short as possible; 1 hop is ideal.

Why does my CNAME not resolve?

The chain may point to a name that no longer exists, or a hop may be missing. This tool shows exactly where the chain ends.
